With the introduction of the new Workplace Health and Safety Legislation on 1st January 2012, the old OHS consultation/committee has been replaced by Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Health and Safety Committees (HSCs). At Skillvance, we offer a HSR course in Penrith that helps HSRs familiarise themselves with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand their expanded roles, responsibilities and powers under the new WHS Legislation.

The role of an HSR is to facilitate the flow of information about health and safety issues between the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU – the new term that includes employers) and the workers in their work group. The additional powers and functions of the HSR, such as the issuing of a provisional improvement notice (PIN) or directing unsafe work practices to cease, can only be exercised if a person has undertaken this training course.

The course is available to any elected or ‘deemed’ HSR or deputy HSR who requests training.

The topics covered in the Health and Safety Representatives course include:

Day 1 – Workplace Health and Safety Framework

Day 2 – Consultation, Representation and Participation

Day 3 – Role of the HSR in Issue Resolution and Minimising Risks

Day 4 – Inspections, Notifiable Incidents and Investigation

Day 5 – Provisional Improvement Notices (PINS) and Ceasing Unsafe Work

On successful completion of this HSR course, each participant will receive a WorkCover Health and Safety Representative Certificate. Full 5 day attendance is required.
